"They are Manolos for muddy days."-a fashionista referring to her wellies from Why we all love wellies
Wellington boots (noun) also known as wellies, topboots, gumboots or rubber boots were worn and popularized by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and fashionable among the British aristocracy in the early 19th century. They are usually worn in wet or muddy conditions, just below the knee.
Sure, hunters, farmers, fisherman and new mom Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (watch the climax for a reminder) put their wellies to good use. Function over fashion for them, darlings. But we see fashionistas like Kate Moss at the Glastonbury Festival (the oh so cool music festival across the pond) running around in their Hunter wellies, and the rubber boots never looked more stylish--mud and all.
London summers known to be muddy and rainy cause locals to bring out their basic and colorful and whimsical rain boots. But wellies have become a style classic worldwide, popping up on runways in a wide range of colors and fun styles. Even if you're a city slicker like me and just need to make your way through the parking lot in a rain storm or perhaps you need a pair for a bit of gardening, the options are endless. The Hunter Wellingtons (pictured above in green) are probably the most well known and are available at shopbop.com and zappos.com, while L.L. Bean also makes some colorful ones here in the U.S. like the green and polka dot ones.
It's difficult not to spot a pair of these boots on the fashion elite. From the Queen of England to the iconic Moss who made the Hunter boots famous at Glastonbury over the years (her two looks from this year and last year along with Daisy Lowe are pictured above). Jennifer Aniston can also be seen wearing a pair in her SmartWater advertisements.
